On This Night -- Christmas Eve Service

December 24, 2019

Was it really all that silent on that silent night so long ago?
Nights with newborns are not necessarily quiet.
For even the tiniest ones can make their
new voices heard.
Was the world then so much more
silent than the world now?
Even without the thrum and whir of
of all our industrious industry,
noise and sound still issued
from people and animal alike.
Was it really all that silent on that silent night so long ago?
Though shepherds were struck speechless
with awe at the unexpected arrival of heavenly host,
those flocks they were keeping by night
must have made a terrible din.
Perhaps even the stars in the dark sky
echoed with raucous song.
Was it really all that silent on that silent night so long ago?
Yet even if the joyful noise
of heaven’s choirs
made the whole earth ring,
there must have been a moment,
just a moment
when all was silent,
all was still.
All creation hushed in expectation,
awaiting the sound of a baby’s first cry.
And when that wonderful wail was heard
O the sound of rejoicing
from heaven to earth
and back again!
On that night,
that holy night,
that boisterously beautiful
holy night.
On this night
the world is no less
noisy.
Our ears ring with
its steady drumbeat of
tumult and commotion.
But even with the constant clamor this
weary world still
waits with hope and expectation
for the sound
of a baby’s cry.
And on this night,
maybe for a moment,
just a moment
as we wait
and watch
and wonder
the din will die down
the noise of the world
will cease into silence,
and the sound of
his cry will be heard once more.
And when that heavenly protest
reaches our eager ears,
O the rejoicing!
For unto us a child is born!
Unto us a child is given!
On this night,
this holy night
this silent night
all will be calm
and all will be bright.
On this night,
this holy night,
angels bend low to touch the earth
and the heavens resound with joyful exultation

On this night,
this holy night,
mystery and matter meet,
Word becomes flesh,
God is with us.
On this night,
This holy night
Hope is renewed
Peace is possible
Joy disrupts
And on this night
this holy night
Love Incarnate
is born again.
Amen.
